Moving fast

Demolition, man

Monday (yesterday) was lumber delivery day:

Today included the demolition of the existing dining room punch-out ...

... and the framing of our new laundry room:

Tomorrow, weather permitting, they're scheduled to start the framing of the addition. Can't wait! 

Progress

Lots has happened since I last posted.

Inspections have been passed.
Footings have been poured:

Foundation has been built:

Slab and north patio have been poured. It's fun to be able to see footprint of the addition.

Framing is set to begin (and end) next week!

Permitted

On Wednesday morning, our contractor passed on the word that the City has issued our permit for construction to commence. Our project manager stopped the masonry work he was doing on our front window -- working on things they had begun that didn't require a permit -- and immediately began making preparations for the footings to be poured.

This morning, the inspector signed off on the progress so far -- the concrete gets poured tomorrow!

Nice hole

The space for our new foundation is taking shape. With the exception of one limestone "shelf" they had to spend a little extra energy on, the guys didn't run into too many underground obstacles, so all is pretty smooth so far.

No word yet on whether they'll let me keep the backhoe as a toy.

Back, ho!

The demolition begins. The backhoe is here to start getting the back yard ready for the foundation of the addition.

The patio (concrete slab) will be the first to go; digging out for the foundation (inside the spray-painted white line) will be next. Sue invited a friend and her 3-year-old son to watch the demolition fun.

Breaking Bad

I've broken a lot of things in my life (some dishware, a few speed limits, a heart or two, the occasional wind), and now feels like a great time to break something new.

Today Sue and I break ground on an addition on our house. We'll be adding an upstairs-downstairs addition (about 340 ft² total) that will expand our dining room downstairs and give us a bonus room upstairs (play room/media room/guest room/man cave). We're also adding new kitchen countertops and sinks, wood flooring throughout the downstairs, and a new laundry room area. We hope to be done with construction by the end of May.

Here are some images from the plans our contractor submitted to the city and to our HOA for permitting and approval, respectively. The darker lines in each image represent the new construction.
